The Health Benefits and Uses of American Elderberries

Elderberries have been gaining significant attention for their potential health benefits. These small, dark purple berries, harvested from the Sambucus canadensis (native to North America) shrub, are not only rich in nutrients but also have a long history of medicinal uses.

Did you know that Hippocrates said elderberries were "Nature's Medicine Chest"? He believed all parts of the elderberry plant could be used to heal certain parts of our bodies.

What parts of the elderberry plants do we use? The berries, the leaves and the flowers go into a number of our different juice and skin care products. Dormant canes we cut in the winter (if not sold as cuttings) are made into pollinator houses and can be used as fencing. We have sent dormant canes across the country to be made into flutes, fire tubes, brooms and more! Even the tiny elderberry seeds we've seen be extracted for their oil to use in soap and as an exfoliator.

Why Choose Elderberries?

Elderberries are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. They are particularly high in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants like flavonoids. Studies have shown that these compounds can boost the immune system, helping to fend off illnesses. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of elderberries may assist in reducing chronic disease risks.

What is the Difference Between Elderberry and American Elderberry?

While the terms "elderberry" and "American elderberry" are often used interchangeably, there is a distinction. The common elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has European origins, while American black elderberry (Sambucus nigra spp. canadensis) is native to North America. Here at River Hills Harvest, we have big plans for our American elderberries and would like to see them be the most readily available in the USA, instead of imported, Sambucus nigra elderberries.

American elderberry is more shrub like, able to be grown in backyard gardens or commercially farmed. They are commonly used in juices, jams, wines, and syrups. The berries of both varieties offer similar health benefits, but American elderberries offer a few BIG differences in characteristics.

  1. American black elderberries can be consumed raw and do not need to be boiled or cooked to consume. This is not the case for other elderberry varieties.

  2. American black elderberries contain more known antioxidants. This allows us to create a not-from-concentrate, stunning colored and even better flavored juice.

  3. Imported elderberries are generally only available in dried form, anything you make with them will have a large amount of water in it. Our American Elderberry Juice is made from fresh squeezed elderberries.

  4. You may find an elderberry concentrate made from Sambucus nigra elderberries, but why don't you see one made from American elderberries? A concentrate requires long periods of high heat and cooking, we do not need to cook our juice and can preserve even more valuable nutrients by making no or low heat processed juice.

Consuming Elderberries

Elderberries can be consumed in various forms, from syrups to jams to baked goods. We sell our American Elderberry Juice and American Elderberry Cordial as the most nutrient dense options for your body. Since they are made from American elderberries, or Sambucus nigra spp canadensis, they do not need to be boiled to consume. If you are using imported, Sambucus nigra or other elderberries native to North America they DO require cooking before consumption. Our American Elderberry Juice is made using a low heat process and is not pasteurized. Pretty cool, huh?

There are many types of elderberry products on the market, why is a juice the best choice? It's the most nutrient dense. Our juice is made with freshly squeezed berries, it's carb free, zero added sugar, water or alcohol, naturally vegan and non-GMO. Learn more about our American Elderberry Juice HERE.

There are many ways to enjoy elderberry as a flavoring also. However, many of those products contain a large amount of sugar and we wouldn't recommend them if you are trying to supplement your diet with elderberry daily. We would recommend you take our Juice, Cordial or eat our freeze-dried elderberries for the highest nutrient content. Learn more about using freeze-dried berries on our Recipes page.

A few healthy ways to get your daily elderberry dose by taking our juice or using freeze-dried berries:

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of juice to carbonated or seltzer water with a dash of honey and/or lemon for a refreshing elderberry soda. Learn more HERE.

  2. Add 1 tablespoon of freeze-dried berries and steep into your hot tea blend.

  3. Add 1 tablespoon of freeze-dried berries OR 1 tablespoon of juice in the blender with the rest of your daily smoothie ingredients. It really brings out the flavor of other fruits/veggies and herbs. Learn more HERE.
